On the week beginning the 16th May, 100s of extras were fitted into their costumes and were given haircuts to match the time period.
The Norwegian Rogaland ship arrived in Dunkerque on the 18th May. It had been painted white, compared to the black and white it was shown to be on older photographs. By the 22nd May, the Rogaland had been turned into a hospital ship with red crosses painted across it. I suggested it may play the part of the HMS Paris which was attacked and sunk during the evacuation.
The Maillé-Brézé was also seen to have been relabeled as the D36, confirming it is to play the HMS Vivacious. One ship was also seen to display D54 which means it’s the HMS Vanquisher. There was however some confusion over a ship bearing J22, which identifies it as the HMS Britomart, which was not involved in the evacuation. Other ships included those labelled as the F34 and the H11. These ships are portraying the HMS Jaguar (badly damaged) and the HMS Basilisk (sank).
The list of large ships known to be taking part in Dunkirk’s filming so far are the Maillé-Brézé, Castor, Naaldwijk, Sittard and Rogaland.
As well as actual ships, a large structure which looks to be the remains of a sunken ship’s funnel was pictured by the harbour.
On the 19th May, a restaurant in Dunkerque suggested Harry had been taking part in diving scenes in the harbour. These were believed to be rehearsals.
By the 19th May, both Fionn Whitehead and Aneurin Barnard were confirmed to be in Dunkerque. There was also another potential photo of Cillian Murphy with Christopher Nolan, however he has not been seen since.
Around the 20th May, Nolan was spotted setting up for beach scenes. His crew were seen holding up paintings of rows of soldiers which would be used to help fill up the scenes of extras.
On the 20th May, an article confirmed that the team would in fact film in the Netherlands rather than in Canada. Filming is expected to last 5 weeks in France, 4 weeks in the Netherlands and a week in the UK. No length of time was given for filming in the US.
On the 20th May, Variety confirmed that French actor Damian Bonnard would feature in Dunkirk.
One of the many sets completed is a fake restaurant called Restaurant De La Digue. Paintings of vehicles have also been added to the beach as well as the real vehicles to help to fill up shots.
Photos were taken of a number of film crew vehicles parked up along one of the beaches by the 21st May.
Filming began on the 23rd May with the first week’s filming based in the Leffrinckoucke and Malo-les-Bains areas of Dunkirk.
Warner Brothers released a press release on the 23rd May. It confirmed that filming would take place in France, the Netherlands, the UK and LA and also confirmed a few new cast members: James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan and Tom Glynn-Carney.
By the 24th May, it was assumed that Harry had moved out of the hotel he had been using and may have been put into a private residence, perhaps outside of Dunkerque. This may have been due to fans gathering at the hotel and the local press leaking his location.
The crew were photographed using a wind machine as part of filming. The scene involved versions of the leaflets dropped on allied troops by German aircraft to convince them to surrender.
A new photo of Harry on set, thought to have been taken at his earlier costume fitting, was released by the local press on the 24th May. His character was seen to have an injury on his hand with blood staining his bandage. He was also wearing a life jacket.
An article in the French press stated that actors would not be allowed to bring their phones onto the set with them. It also stated that sets would be blocked by trucks to attempt some secrecy and block access to fans and locals. The article also noted that filming was almost delayed due to a large fire in a building which is providing necessary technology for the movie.
Both Fionn Whitehead and Damian Bonnard were pictured on set on the 24th May. Some of the extras in these scenes were French soldiers, identifiable by their helmets.
Many local restaurants and buildings were closed to allow filming on Thursday the 26th and Friday the 27th May.
Hundreds of extras were seen on the beaches of Dunkerque for filming on the 26th May. Some of the extras photographed were seen to be playing stretcher-bearers. Fionn and Aneurin were also present. A Spitfire was also seen flying across the beach with a helicopter filming beside it.
On the 26th May, it was confirmed that filming would move to Urk in the Netherlands after Dunkerque. Local newspaper Het Urkerland said that Urk's harbour will be used as a base for the crew, with a fleet of ships involved.
On the 27th May, a large series of explosions were filmed across the beach.
On the 28th May, an interview was released with Dunkirk’s Casting Director John Papsidera. He described how Harry had been through a number of readings to win his role in Dunkirk, and how he had beaten hundreds of other actors to his part, including well-known actors and many who have been to prestigious acting schools. He also confirmed that filming would continue until late September 2016.
